Good Places to eat in amsterdam?

Can anyone tell me some good places to eat at in Amsterdam, I am staying between Central Station and Dam Square and am wondering where everyones favorite places to eat are and I am wondering what the Channelites opinions are...... I love Barney's , and there is a French place with soups and sandwiches ( it is real close to the Grey Area ) but I cant remember what it is called, and there is an Argentina Steak house close called Guapo's (I think) and it is not bad. Can anyone afirm what I am speaking of of possibly give me some more options. I would like to know where a good place is to get cheeses and breads and maybe some good places that are not too expensive!!

Thanks
There is a great cheese shop on the corner of the Single and Harlemmerstraat called KaasLand. They have some great bread as well. There is a place called Foodism right near the Grey Area that is a pretty good sandwich/soup place.
think you mean gaucho's
to post a response, instead of new post, good eats.

wd
De Pijp is flush with good, cheap ethnic eateries. I ate one of my favorite meals in Amsterdam at Saray, a Turkish place on Gerard Doustraat.

We also had several meals at Pata Negra on Utrechtstraat -- crowded & loud, but great tapas.
Barney's is good for brekk and lunch. Order your meal at 9 am, smoke your brains out, the food will be delivered to your table promptly by 1 pm.
Stay Home then Whiner. Barneys is Great.
HOW ABOUT A PLACE FOR LATE-LATE NIGHT MUNCHIES?
Your luckey if they are not running you out of there, the place has changed alot in the past 8 years or so...... it use to be a very traditional irish cookie....they have lightened up a fair and put good concentration into thier gear....Sweat Tooth, Morning Glory, Buddah's Smile
Tooth? wow, they really have gone downhill :)

You can also try http://www.specialbite.com for really special places to eat.

And the Vlaamse Frites Stall on Voetboogstraat (whose name escapes me for the moment, but I'm sure someone will be happy to provide this info) just round the corner from Dampkring and Dansen Bij Jansen is open late, serving cheap and tasty frites.
Sweet tooth was good, but Morning Glory was better!!!!
Go to the site www.diningcity.nl and search some things out. They have a great site, with a lot of descriptions, directions, and you can even make reservations at some of the restaurants online.
A couple of my favorites are Kantjil en de Tijger for Indonesian, Casa di David for Italian, De Belhamel for French, and Oude Holland for Dutch. PM me for addresses and phone numbers... have a great time!
Bojo, an Indonesian restaurant right off the most touristy part of the Leiidseplein is open late (until 3am,) when we went there, I noticed they have different dishes than most Indonesian places I'd been, I had a seafood hot pot which was really excellent and spicy. Perfect winter meal (it was this past January.)

It seems there are a few restaurants around that area that stay open late, and while they tend to be touristy, I for one, think it never hurts to remind oneself, 'yes, I am a tourist', so why not go to a place that caters to one's needs when you're looking for convinence? You may find the ambience suffers, but when you're hungry late at night, you're usually thinking more about convenience than ambience.
Delores on Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal (around 287), is a little cottage like place on a triangular lot, that serves wicked tasty organic burgers, and frites, and is open till 3 am in summer.

Maoz Falafel at Leidsestraat 85, is open 24 hrs. Mmm.. unlimited topping falafel.

couple more links for you, enjoy.

How about some good pizza?
If and only if, its fresh out of the oven, I like New York pizza. I'd also like to hear who else makes good cheese wheel.
I agree: Bojo is good, another good good indonesian is Kantijl on Spuistraat near on the Spui, but is a little bit more expensive than Bojo
if you love latin american food, I give you 2 more tips:

casa peru, corner leidsegracht/prinsengracht, ask for ceviche
los pilones, kerkstraat near CS global chillage, is a mexican tapas bar with wonderful food and margaritas

peace&love
No chance. Really. Amsterdam pizza is infamously terrible. The closest you'll get is the Pizza Hut in the Marriot Hotel on Stadhouderskade near Leideseplein. It's in their restaurant/cocktail bar and the brrown-ish bar out the front.

While you're there, stop for a drink in Cafe Americain attached to the Ameircan Hotel. It's lovely and actually cheaper than some places in the RLD.
I agree -- this place was superb, as was the ceviche.
Thanks for the suggestions speedlink. I'll have to try both of those on my upcoming trip.

If any of you are tempted to try a pizza pancake, DON'T. I had one on my last trip at the pancake corner, down the street from the Noon, and it was fairly gross.
Round the corner from the Krasnapolsky there are a few late night pizza takeout places, serving slices of fresh pizza. And they are fine, especially when you are starved. We used to get a few slices and take them back. Also walk from Dam Square down to the flower market and 10 mins later, on the right hand side is an 'all you can eat Chinese'. You pay 7e and get an hour. It is great quick food.
Actually there are loads of great places to eat.
Thanks a lot all of these are really good suggestions!!

couple questions? What is 'Ceviche' ?

Is the 7 euro all-you-can-eat cHinese Buffet any good??? really?

Where is a good cheap breakfast buffet or cheaper good breakfast? Its the most important meal of the day.
The 7e eat all you want is fantanstic. Excellent food. Just keep on helping yourself for an hour. Chicken, ribs, noodles, prawns, rice etc and loads of stuffed balls. We had eaten enough after 50 mins.
Well worth it!
The Golden
..is what I think you guys are referring to.

The food is: good, cheap, hot, spicy (not too), plentiful, high cholesterol, high carbohydrate, like a fantasy come true when stoned with the munchies...

Zeedijk 109
in case you dont see it in the subject line above, its

Dim Sum Court
Zeedijk 109
MMMMM Dim Sum Court........makes me hungry right now!!!
Not true, There are some really good italian restaurants in amsterdam :

Angoletto, Hemonystraat 18, 6764182 Italian restaurant. Italian personnel bakes wonderful pizzas. Pasta dishes are meant as first course, hence small portions. Gets too hot and overcrowded in summer, but it's *really* Italian.

Ok, two places that come to mind with a decent menu athat won't set you back too far are 1e Klass (First Class) Platform 2b Centrall Station. Yes the food is not spectacular, but it is good, the selection is huge, the room is to die for and the help is quick. Plus as DB knows you can get Chimay or Westmalle there.

Here is someone elses review but it captures the place accurately:

The other is Cafe Het Molen Pad, the place is open for lunch and dinner but it at its most inviting for lunch. Jazz playing on the deck, newspapers for the patrons. Cafe Verkeerd to die for. Most imprtantly, an innovative and inexpensive menu. Kick back and have some killer apple pie ala mode to wash it all down. Releteively easy walk off of Liedesestraat (sp) and Prinsengraght.

Café Galerie Het Molenpad
Prinsengracht 653, 1016 HV in Amsterdam

One of our favorite restaurants is the Fantasia which is an Italian place west of the Leidseplein at Marnixstraat 417; so authentic they hardly spoke English. We always left VERY satisfied for around 10 Euro each.
It's across from what used to be the Belluvue theatre that closed the day before we were there. I hear it's reopened as something else now but I forget what.
I also agree with the Dim Sung recommendation, probably the best 7 Euro I spent the whole trip.
does anyone know of a good sandwich shop, a submarine sandwich-type shop (not subway :)

i know of one, loekie, any others?
Ate at a few good places this summer, one of my favorites was a place called "harlem" on haarlemmerstraat, don't remember the exact address, but it was just before you get to barney's on the opposite side of the street. Excellent (large) outdoor seating area if the weather's nice, and the staff were, dare I say, extremely friendly. =)

VVTL
What was the food like and the prices at Harlam?
Ragan -- Ceviche is raw fish that is 'cooked' in a viniagrette marinade, usually with onions & herbs. It's really good if its properly done.
Eww nasty raw fish??
If I wanted some raw fish with a marinade I would go to the Red Light District and find some nasty girl

Don't let us detain you, then. You'll probably have to wait about five years until you're old enough though

Ceviche is lovely. Try also Swedish Gravadlax (but not surstrommingen, which, to be polite, smells like shit) and rollmop herring.
Post subject: GOOD CHEAP BREAKFAST SPOTS?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can ANyone recomend a couple of good breakfast spots in the Dam? I am going to be close to the city center and central station. Looking for a good breakfast spot. Either hotel or restuarant.. Hopefully cheap or Buffett style??? Can anyone help?
Cheviche is a kind of cold fish soup, "swimming" in a sauce made with authentic latin-american lemon and onions, which taste very very harsh and different from ours, and some pumpkin to cool the harshness. IS ONE OF THE MOST WONDERFUL THINGS I NEVER ATE IN MY LIFE! Plus, once you finish to eat, remains the sauce which is called "leche de tigre" (tiger's milk), drink all is great! And in the end clean your mouth with a "pisco sour", a cocktail made with the national peruan aguardiente.

Freudian slip? LOL

Here's a winner and really easy.

Place chunks of (un cooked) shelled lobster tail and prawns in a non-reactive bowl,
Squeeze limes over the meat.
Add chopped cilantro, onions, and chiles jalapenos. Some salt and a splash of gold tequila. Stir.Place plastic film over the bowl and refrigerate a few hours. Serve on crispy corn tostadas with lots of beer.

Dance,Rummie!- you are quite right.. The citric acid in the limes and the alcohol from the tequila *cook* the fish. A chemical process that I don't really understand.
I plan on going to Albert Cuypstraat and see my favorite fishmonger in April and whipping up a batch! Not much beats fish from the North sea.
IMHO.

Porkchop
Yet another reason to plan on an April trip. Do you ever get into broiled ells? MMMmmm. Do they have Lobstah in the North Sea (excuse my ignorance). What about crabs?
Pax
9-1 thats a long time to wait 4 food
let's all go and eat cheese and bread lol. fuck eating proper meals. who's gonna join me the're next week lol
My favorite restaurant in AMS is Cafe Pacifico at 31 Warmoesstraat. It is one of Europe's first mexican restaurants. The authentic Mexican food is incredible (which isn't always easy to find OUTSIDE of mexico, much less in Europe). I reccomend the taquitos (beef or chix) as an appetizer. The margaritas were great (peach, strawberry or original), but I did notice on my second visit that one girl there was terrible at making them, so the quality of the margaritas I cannot guarantee unless the tall guy with dark hair makes them. However, if you are looking for a WIDE selection of tequila (and a terrible hangover the next morning) they can help you with that, too. Also, they have two lovely black cats that will sit by you while you eat, if you'd like. If you sit on the ground floor, be sure to at least go upstairs to use the bathroom. It's really neat up there, but I can't figure out why they don't use the upstairs area. I think it's so nice to look down onto the street at all of the crazy-asses walking by. Here's a link to their webiste...worth checking out.

Tot Ziens!
Backstage is a nice cafe run by Gary near the Prinsengracht flower market others may know more
if you like thai food a must is Thai Snackbar bird on zeedijk. Might have to queue though, its only got about ten seats. Very cheap and goddamn delicious!

I second what darby said, a great place in the red light area is "pacificos" mexican restaurant. A large place with great ambience and a lot of locals............
There are many good places to eat in Amsterdam its all down to taste top place Sea palace if you like Chineese. my advice is walk by if its busy its good
I totally disagree. I mean, here in NY everytime I walk by TGI Friday's they're crowded as hell. Being crowded is no indication of quality.

As far as places to eat in Amsterdam, personally, I never go for Mexican, Chinese, Italian or Japanese food, because we have so many good places for that kind of thing where I live. None of these immigrant groups have as strong a foothold in Amsterdam as in NY. In Amsterdam I mostly eat food that is from the vicinity (Dutch, German, Belgian, French, etc.) or from a Dutch Colony that has a strong immigrant community in Amsterdam (Indonesian, Surinamese.)

Granted if I lived in Amsterdam, I'm sure I would occasionally get a hankering for tacos or sushi at which point I would not be expecting it to be of the quality I'm used to. And if I lived where my parents do (rural Vermont) I would probably think that any sort of Chinese, Japanese or Mexican restaurant is amazing, because they don't have either in their town.
